Better Living Conditions for 50 Orphans in Tanzania, Second Year

Project location: Tanzania, Kigoma
Project start date: February 2004 - Project end date: January 2005
Project number: 2003-36
Beneficiary: The Jane Goodall Institute

Year II: 2003 - 2004 Project Description

The Nando Peretti Foundation decided to support the Sanganigwa Children's Home in Kigoma for one more year, thanks to the results obtained during the 2002-2003 project. At the moment, "Sanganigwa" hosts 59 children and young people from 3 to 19 years of age belonging to different ethnic groups and faiths. Each child has a different story describing his life before arriving in Kigoma, but most of them have lost their parents because of AIDS or as a consequence of the war in the neighbouring countries. Some of the older ones, came to "Sanganigwa" after living on the streets for years with little hope and opportunity, adapting themselves to the humblest and hardest jobs. The contribution from the Nando Peretti Foundation is determinant to assure a healthy living condition to the orphans. Proper nutrition, medical assistance, education, recreation activities, workers allowances will be insured. To guarantee sustainability to the project, food as well as all needed material will be purchased from the local market. This will not only avoid the high shipping costs, but will keep the orphanage well integrated in the town economic life. Sending parcels from outside is in fact expensive, since Kigoma town is 1939 Km far away from the commercial capital of Tanzania, and give rise to thefts and burglary.

The social worker will attend a specialized pedagogical training course in Europe. The course has not been yet chosen, we are evaluating different possibilities. The social worker, and therefore the children, will take great advantage from the course from the professional side.
An Italian educator, Francesca Chellini, will live with the children for three months with the overall aim to develop creativity, initiative and self-reliance. In particular, she will focus on children in need of special care, and psychological support.

The kitchen, the classroom, and the dining room will be renovated in order to guarantee adequate hygienic and sanitary conditions.
The Nando Peretti Foundation believes that in 2004 this project will have the following outcomes: a general improvement of health condition due to a better quality of life, better hygienic standard, psychological support, trained local staff. Reduction of diseases, such as eye diseases, parasitosis and infections, as a result of the insured medical assistance and drugs availability. Decrease of malaria among the girls, due to the availability of window mosquito nets in their dormitory. Better school performance due to a balanced diet, proper medical assistance and availability of school material.
Increased probability to find a job as a consequence of professional training courses for the older orphans. An overall improvement of the daily functioning of the orphanage, including social relationships.
