Water and Tanks for the Children of Fahamuni School, Kwale County - Kenya

Project location: Kenya, Kwale
Project start date: June 2012 - Project end date: June 2013
Project number: 2012-065
Beneficiary: Progetto Sud

This project aims to improve infrastructure for primary education and access to basic sanitation with water supply tanks to collect rainwater. Activities will be implemented in the county of Kwale, south of Mombasa, along the coast of Kenya. The Kwale County is largely arid and semi arid, with a tourist industry in developing tourism sector. This industry, however, does not bring benefits to local people. The inhabitants of the area live below the poverty line and it is chronic the lack access to drinking water and the difficult of access to primary education. Drinking water is remarkably low, and most of the population benefits through uncontrolled wells, near the points where water is accessible, bathrooms are badly situated and this contributes to pollution of groundwater. In areas of Mwangulu and Magdzoni, the ground is very unstable that makes latrine wall will reinforced to prevent collapse and pollution of groundwater with sewage. In other areas of the county, the underground water level is so small that risk of pollution with sewage is almost constant. It is therefore necessary to build sanitation with suitable containers and rooms that can recycle the sewage safely.

The project promotes methods of safety sanitation and access to drinking water not contaminated. Sanitary accompanied by basic health education can be the starting point for a sustainable local development, primarily by ensuring access to primary education for boys and girls. This project, in fact, concerns the construction of toilets in the schools located in the villages, since this is considered vital points of local communities by ensuring appropriated and separate toilets, also allows you, especially girls, to receive a regular primary education.

The Fahamuni Primary School along the street L-Lunga/Likoni, has about 800 scholars. The building has an open well, without cover and it is very dangerous for children; the well is used, as for the other, even by the village community. The school has 4 bathrooms, two for boys and two for girls which are in poor conditions and do not have roof. The classes are very old and in poor conditions. The school has a few benches and some tables have been borrowed from neighbouring schools.

The proposed project has two parallel modules:
The first module includes the construction of toilets for Fahamuni Primary School lacated in the area, by supplying tanks to collect rain water for bathing themselves.
Alongside the construction of toilets and supply tanks, it will also provide classrooms, as school is overcrowded and many students are forced to follow the lessons on the ground.

The second parallel module provides health and hygiene education classes (proper use of water, basic hygiene and basic behavioral rules) and courses in nutrition education and the construction of gardens for families.

The schools examined by Progetto Sud are 30 in need of the same elements. Concerning this project proposal, the selected school is the school of Fahamuni. It has been selected the most disadvantaged schools and with a greater number of other students. The selection was very painful because there are many structures that require sanitary basic structures.

The project aims to improve the hygiene of drinking water for most of people of the area to prevent, through construction of tanks and development of the bathrooms, many diseases which are located in the area due to water pollution in groundwater.

Finally, there is a specific awareness-raising activities throughout the territory through the production of information materials and leaflets on the importance of the issues addressed by the project itself.
