Respiratory assistance for babies with insufficiency

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of "La Sapienza" University has a long tradition as a centre for the care of premature infants with a high standard of quality. Infants born prematurely have pulmonary immaturity that often results in respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation. Although necessary to sustain life this technique can be aggressive to the developing lung and predispose to a number of complications (i.e. air leaks, chronic pulmonary disease). In recent years, a new system, which supports the breathing effort of neonates suffering from respiratory distress, has been developed. The device which is an evolution of the "infant flow system" provides a greater assistance to the spontaneous breathing by using the same system of ventilation as the one through the endotracheal tube. In many cases this method not only eliminates the need for conventional mechanical ventilation but can also be successful in reducing the length of mechanical ventilation.
The Nando Peretti Foundation funded the Istituto di Clinica Pediatrica - Cattedra di Terapia Intensiva Neonatale of the Policlinico Umberto I (University of Rome "La Sapienza") for purchasing the above mentioned device.
