[2011-47]

After the Egyptian revolution of January 2011, the political, social and economic situation in the country has been deteriorating ever since. Prices constantly increase, tourism is decreasing, and unemployment , particularly in the poorest regions under the care of Associazione Bambino Gesu Egitto ONLUS, has reached the peak of 75%. Finally the trend towards Islamic extremism of the country has resulted in a deteriorating relation between Christians and Muslims.

Rather than mere "assistance", the final aim of the Association has always been that of promoting the psychological and economic autonomy of the poor people of the El Minia community. There are, however, within the poorest regions of El Minia, absolutely dramatic family contexts, due to devastating diseases, handicaps, elderly people without assistance and endless others cases, which require external help and immediate relief and assistance.

This is the reason why, with the support of Nando Peretti Foundation, the Association has chosen 150 families from the most needy ones of ten villages at the outskirts of El Minia such as Towa, Dalga, Mallawy, Abukurkas, Manhal, Nagia, Eldik, El Harif, Tantawy, Bardanuha and Badraram. These families were provided with a monthly large bag of food: rice, pasta, dry vegetables, butter, chicken, sugar, tomato sauce. 1650 bags of food have been delivered so far; by the end of the year, when the project is completed, 1800 bags of food will be delivered.

The results are not only those referring to food assistance. Families and children in fact have been monitored from the sanitary and psychological points of view too. The hardest cases have been directed to other help projects, in order to be better assisted.

By year 2013, the project "Providing monthly food assistance for one year to poor families of the Coptic- Catholic community of the Diocese of El Minia, Egypt" which was born and carried on to this extension with the help of the Nando Peretti Foundation, is expected to become fully self-supporting, thanks to the efforts of the Associazione Bambino Gesu Egitto ONLUS.
