BirdLife International is a global partnership of about 100 national conservation organisations that aim to protect birds & biodiversity and work with people towards the sustainable use of natural resources.

The Important Bird Area Programme of BirdLife International is a worldwide initiative to identify and protect a network of critical sites (IBAs) for the conservation of the world's birds and biodiversity.

Bird Life International with a grant from the Nando Peretti Foundation has created a fund for financing urgent interventions oriented to bird's safeguard in Eastern Europe. A special committee have been established in order to gather information and decide the most urgent interventions in Europe.

Initially, four projects were started:

  • Developing a Network of local caretakers for the protection of key areas for biodiversity in Romania
  • Nurturing conservation through environmental education in Turkey
  • Involving local volunteers in the protection of Senne in Slovakia
  • Awareness campaign with the locals in protecting Prip'yat River Valley in Ukraine against canalisation.

  • This project received a grant for a second year in 2002.
