A) Regarding the first sub-project, in this first phase of the activity, a protocol of cognitive and linguistic evaluation has been submitted to a group of 27 deaf children between 3 and 6 years of age and a group of 30 control children. The protocol of evaluation has been differentiated on the basis of chronological age of the children and their cognitive, communicative and linguistic abilities. In a sub-group of 14 deaf children, and in a sub-group of hearing control children, there has been included an observation of the use of the gestural modality (communicative gestures and signs of LIS), both in spontaneous situation (interactions with the adult) and through the use of direct (tests) and/or indirect (questionnaires for parents) tools. Evaluations confirmed a great individual variability between participants, some of whom, also because of cognitive difficulties, couldn't finish the given tasks. Through the results scored by a sub-group of 15 deaf children it has been possible to identify two distinct protocols of observation that can be administered to children on the basis of both chronological age and linguistic experiences, that is the period from diagnosis and implantation to the observation moment. Data collected so far have been transcribed, codified and inserted in a database.
In order to collect the children (a very difficult task) we have contacted speech pathologists and neuropsychiatrists operating in public services, within the national health service or privately. We have also collaborated with the "Center on Deafness" operating in the Institute of the Deaf in Via Nomentana, Rome.

B) Regarding the sub-project "Kit of mini-stories", some short films in Italian Sign Language have been recorded, also regarding the story "No, no poi no", Babalibri Editors, and the opening video to the DVD has been prepared with the different options: choice of the story, glossary of words and phrases, narration in signs.
The demo has been presented to the Book Fair of Turin from RAI (Italian Radio-Television), thanks to the collaboration between ISTC of the CNR and Doc. Barbara Ardito director of RAI junior, raising a lot of interest from the public.
The DVD have been also presented during conferences and seminars.
For this sub-project, 250 copies of the book "I have found a robin" (Lapis Editor) have been bought, and distributed for free together with the DVD to families, speech-therapists and educators.
