Promoting Health Education and Constructing Sanitation Facilities in 6 Rural Schools

Project location: India, Kurnool District
Project start date: June 2009 - Project end date: July 2010
Project number: 2009-10
Beneficiary: Kurnool Rural Development Health Society

The organization has conducted an intensive surveillance in 6 villages and identified the needs of health promotion and sanitation facilities in 6 primary schools. The school children do not get safe-drinking water till they leave school. The government has not provided such facilties in the rural primary/secondary schools at all. Due to this problems the children go out of the school for natural call or sometime they function in around the schools which create health hazardous. The children are not aware of health, personal hygiene, sanitation and environment cleanliness. Thus, the organization wish to introduce health promotion and construct sanitary facilities for well being of the children.

The Nando Peretti Foundation has co-financed this project to achieve the following goals:

- To teach to the children that they should be as health and happy as possible. Good health contributes to a happy childhood.
- School children study better and they will be happier in school if they are fit and well.
- School children protected by illness don't miss school often.
- School children properly fit and well when they are present in school will better concentrate on their lessons without falling behind in their class work.
- School children are of part of a family: they will spread good health messages and good health practice from school to home.
- School children are tomorrow's parents. If they learn and practice good health knowledge and skills now and develop caring attitudes, they are likely to carry these forward to the next generation.
- Children who are taught to observe, to listen, to communicate, to take decisions about their own health and about the health of others become not only good parents but active and useful community members.

Five Components of a health Programme will be conducted in Schools as under:

Basic Heath Instruction: Children need to learn specific health facts and ideas to understand them and the ideas behind them. This implies that there is a planned programme to teach these ideas and the time available to do it. Children also need to be taught through a methodology which develops life skills. Health ideas and Skills reinforced across the Curriculum: Since every teacher is a teacher of health they can introduce examples and activities connected to health in much of their teaching. This helps children understand the health messages better and makes subjects like regarding or maths or art more real, more interesting and more active by linking them with topics which are interesting and important to children.

Good health practiced around the School: This involves planning to make the school a safe and healthy place, providing a clean environment and the best possible nutrition for the children. All who work in the school have a role to play in helping to achieve these goals. This would imply a set of school health rules and active health responsibilities for teachers and children. Local communities also have responsibilities in provision of facilities for schools. Local government bodies will be awared of these responsibilities.

Health Knowledge and Skills Spread to the Communities: These involve active community participation in school health promotion and the transfer of knowledge from school to community this is where the involvement of children using effective child-to child approaches becomes so important.

School Health Services: These involve establishing the closest possible links with health workers so that together they can:
- Take action to prevent ill health and unhappiness in children and their families and ensure that there is no discrimination either between sexes or according to belief or social class.
- Help to monitor the health (including hygiene and nutrition) of children and the school as whole.
- To provide expert to teachers and children so that they can treat simple conditions and can choose, tech and pass on correct messages.
- Treat or refer children who are unwell, under nourished or disabled or who are learning difficulties or who suffer from accidents or abuse.
- To give help and support to children in school who have long-term problems with their health or in their homes.
