One Year Salary Grant for a Nurse Assisting the Terminally Ill

Project location: Italy, Rome
Project start date: May 2009 - Project end date: April 2010
Project number: 2009-11
Beneficiary: HOSPICE SACRO CUORE

Sacro Cuore is a highly specialized health organization associated with the Italian National Health System.

Sacro Cuore offers sanitary and socio-sanitary assistance to:

- 30 hospice in-patients and up to 120 homecare terminal patients;

- 20 day-care out-patients and up to 50 homecare patients affected by Alzheimer;

- 3 hospice in-patients and up to 6 homecare patients affected by the Lou Gherig disease (ALS).

Sacro Cuore employs 160 staff, 60 of which are permanent employees, and about 100 are out-sourced personnel. Sacro Cuore's main aim is to grant high quality assistance plus maximum support to all the enrolled patients, their families and their caregivers.

The National Health System reduced, as from 1st January 2009, the daily rate for homecare service to terminal patients.
Sacro Cuore was therefore obliged to reduce, among others, the standard of the nursing services in order to meet the new constraint.
In addition to other steps, the number of nurses attached to the 3 wards, in the afternoon and night shifts, was therefore reduced from 6 to 4.
It is essential to employ one more nurse, in the afternoon shift, to improve the in-hospice service and to stand-by on call for the emergencies of the homecare service.
Sacro Cuore will ask one of the two Cooperatives for Professional Nurses, already supplying the nursing personnel for the 3 hospice wards, to provide one more Nurse, from 2pm to 8pm, all year round.

The nursing time of assistance, granted to in-hospice patients, is expected to
increase by 20%, equivalent to an additional 10min/patient, during the afternoon
shift.
The support granted by the Peretti Foundation, together with the overall results achieved through the current activity, will be evaluated in accordance with the procedures defined by the UNI EN ISO 9001:2000 Quality Certification and periodically extended through the "Hospice Services Booklet".
