Donation of a Tensile Structure with a Lab and Dressing Rooms for Nursing Course

Project location: Italy, L'Aquila
Project start date: July 2009 - Project end date: July 2011
Project number: 2009-33
Beneficiary: ASL Avezzano Sulmona L'Aquila

This project, which received funding from the Nando Peretti Foundation, was submitted to the Foundation by fundraiser Barbara Lief and Prof. Vincenzo Tombolini, Chairman, Department of Radiation Oncology San Salvatore Hospital of L'Aquila. The project goal is to provide the San Salvatore Hospital, the only hospital in the city, severely damaged by the earthquake of 6 April 2009, with a mobile structure to hold lectures for school nurses and hospital technicians, as well as a machine for ultrasound.

The San Salvatore Hospital is the only point of reference for the citizens of L'Aquila and its neighbors and assists a total of about 300,000 people. Following the earthquake, the building has about 100 hospital beds and two operating rooms fit for use, in addition to 80 beds and two operating rooms available in facilities with the region, located in neighboring towns.
After the G8 Summit, the Government has granted the hospital the use of a hospital structure arranged for the guests of the Summit, a prefabricated structure with an operating room without a department for radiological or ultrasound examinations. For the citizens of L'Aquila  access to the diagnostic tests had become very complicated and required several trips and in case of surgery, waiting lists had become very long. The NPF, at the request of Professor Tombolini, decided to give the hospital an ultrasound of the latest generation need to replace the old and obsolete ultrasound from a hospital in the Marche region.

San Salvatore is also a University Hospital that, after the earthquake, was trying hard to keep alive the possibility of a Medicine degree and attract students from around the Abruzzo region, but needed to keep the classrooms where lessons could be held since most rooms were used mainly for  medical service at the expense of university education.
The hospital had therefore requested the Peretti Foundation for a donation to carry out the three-year degree courses in Nursing and Medical Techniques of Diagnostic Imaging and Radiotherapy, to ensure the continued functioning of university education consisting of theoretical and practical courses.

The mobile tensile structure school for nurses and technicians has been purchased from the company EDY Spa, which specializes in the provision of field hospitals. EDY The company was also responsible for training local personnel of the hospital for installation and maintenance of the structure.
The mountable pneumatic structure is made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a thermal and flame-retardant plastics, and consists of three separate buildings  connected to each other. The three sections include: 1 - the reception room / dressing room 2 - the meeting hall, and 3 - the classroom for the courses. The outer surface is 121 square meters and the total height is 3.4 meters. Inside, the facility will be equipped with air conditioning and heating.
The donation of the Peretti Foundation also includes the installation of a multimedia system in the building, consisting of a screen, projector, television, sound mixer and all the equipment needed for the lectures. it also includes the furniture to decorate the room, or 40 chairs with a small table to support the notebooks and books and a chair for the teacher.

The ultrasound machine is manufactured by the company MyLab50 Gold and will be donated to the hospital for diagnostic imaging services, in addition to making it available for the above-mentioned courses.
