Project location: Côte d'Ivoire
Project start date: September 2009 - Project end date: October 2009
Project number: 2009-51
Beneficiary: SMILE TRAIN ITALIA ONLUS

Local doctors and Smile Train volunteers are working together during the mission Smile Train Italy is a non-profit organization formed by volunteer doctors that help poor children affected by cleft lip and palate, burns and war traumas. Smile Train's work consists of organizing missions of reconstructive plastic surgery and maxillofacial surgery in the developing countries such as Africa, Asia and Latin America, where the incidence of these issues is extremely high.
The project "Surgical Mission in Côte d'Ivoire" was born because  Côte d'Ivoire is a country with an elevated incidence of children affected by these pathologies.  For this reason Smile Train Italy has decided to organize there a surgical mission. A volunteer team will join Abidjan in May 2009 for a first assessment mission.

The surgical mission will be conducted in October 2009, for a period of 10 days and the medical equip will be composed by 12 volunteers.
The mission will be articulated in three phases, in the respect of the standard of Smile Train:
1. SCREENING: patients visits
2. SURGICAL OPERATIONS
3. CONTROLS AND RESIGNATIONS OF THE PATIENTS
After the end of the mission Smile Train physicians will follow the patients operated, in cooperation with local doctors.
During the mission Smile Train will conduct a training course for local doctors. Participants will be training surgeons, anaesthesiologists, paediatricians and nurses.
The objective and the result that we might realize with this project is to operate almost 40 children affected by cleft lip and palate, burns and war traumas, and at the same time to form 3/5 local doctors and nurses.
