A Neuro-Robot Navigator for Oncologic and Epileptologic Neurosurgery for the Paediatric Hospital Bambino Gesù

Project location: Italy, Rome
Project start date: March 2010 - Project end date: March 2010
Project number: 2010-06
Beneficiary: Ospedale Pediatrico Bambino Gesù - Fondazione Bambino Gesù Onlus

The Nando Peretti Foundation has awarded a grant to purchase a neuro-robot navigator. The neuro-robot navigator will allow the surgeon to reliably plan precise strategies for the treatment of brain lesions deeply located within the brain parenchyma or seating close to eloquent regions. It will also allow the correct positioning of deep brain recording electrodes.

Programs for the advanced neurosurgical treatment of complex neuro-oncologic lesions and epilepsy refractory to medical treatment will be addressed to patients from Italy and the surrounding Regions abroad.

Surgical procedure planning and reliable navigation to the target is essential for the treatment of deep-seated brain lesions or to locate intra-parenchymal electrodes for continuous recording of EEG activity in patients affected by intractable epilepsy.

The Fondazione Bambino Gesù Onlus, is the Foundation of the Ospedale Pediatrico Bambino Gesù, a benchmark for thousands of Italian families.

The commitment to excellence can first and foremost be measured based on the following achievements: the Hospital has been recognised as a regional and national Reference Centre for many complex pathologies, the fact that they generally deal with highly complex cases as well as having at their disposal highly professional and specialised staff and innovative technology operating within the hospital's 24 specialised disciplines. They show their commitment by continually promoting innovations in the healthcare field. They achieve this by adopting new healthcare related technologies (drugs, surgical procedures, equipment and methodologies used in diagnostics, etc. taken from the research field and applied on patients). They have also recently received accreditation from the Joint Commission International for Accreditation (JCI). And finally, their commitment has resulted in increasing numbers of patients choosing the hospital, as well as having a significant and growing number of patients from other countries. The Hospital specialises in providing healthcare services to children and adolescents. Thanks to its efficiency, structural and technical facilities and highly professional and competent healthcare staff it can provide a highly comprehensive level of assistance, including emergencies and diagnostics.
The Hospital not only provides a paediatric reference centre for residents of Central and Southern Italy, who make up about 25% of patients receiving ordinary care, but also provides its services to non European ethnic groups, who are increasingly emigrating to Italy, and who frequently require the services of one of our three hospitals (Rome, Palidoro and Santa Marinella). It specialises in over 40 fields, from heart surgery to transplants, from neuroscience to plastic surgery, from endocrinology to genetics, from neonatal intensive care to clinical engineering as well as the research and treatment of rare diseases, thus providing children with all the healthcare they need.
Last, but not least, over the last five years children from over 40 foreign countries have been helped by the Ospedale Bambino Gesù thanks to carefully managed and complex charitable missions which have provided specialist care and surgical operations where they are most needed.
