Restoration of the Parish Hall, Ss. Trinita’ Dei Pellegrini, Rome

Project location: Italy, Rome
Project start date: May 2011 - Project end date: July 2011
Project number: 2011-18
Beneficiary: Parrocchia Personale della SS. Trinità dei Pellegrini

Approaching its 400th anniversary, the church of Santissima Trinità dei Pellegrini gained new life when, at the instigation of Pope Benedict XVI, it was established as a personal parish for adherents of the traditional Roman Rite. Now the goal is to re-establish the church as a point of reference for the cultural patrimony of the city of Rome.
A total lack of funds destined to the preservation of infrastructures on the church, means that the newly founded parish needs assistance in restoring the various spaces, liturgical objects and works of art, which are not simply museum pieces, but an integral part of the liturgical and cultural life of the Parish.

This project will focus on one of the seventeenth century room attached to the parish.
This room was part of the official reception rooms of the church, and still features an important XVIII century stucco frame and a coffered ceiling.

The upkeep of the rooms attached to the church of the Trinity has been neglected since 1870 when the properties and finances of this church were confiscated by the newly founded Italian state.

The Parish wishes to restore the seventeenth century room to its former state, and house there the collection of portraits of cardinal protectors and benefactors besides other works and religious paintings dating from the early XVII century to the early XX century and related to the history of the Trinità dei Pellegrini. This represents an important collection of paintings, a typical Roman "quadreria", which merits careful conservation. The room will also house furniture from the XVIII century and thirteen late XIX c. chairs in the traditional late XVI c. style, which have already been restored and re-upholstered in their original style.
The restoration of the room will also include a careful recreation of the original painted wall and coffered ceiling decorations.

In this regard, the Parish received a grant from the Nando Peretti Foundation to finance the restoration of the ceiling and windows, the principal door, and the early XIX c. credence and cupboard; the decorative painting of the walls and ceiling and part of the upholstery work on the thirteen chairs (the restoration of the chairs, and part of the upholstery work has already been financed by different benefactors).
