Empowering Community Conservation Management Through Capacity Building and Sustainable Livelihood Opportunities in the Golden Stream Corridor Preserve, Belize - Year III

Project location: Belize, Golden Stream
Project start date: June 2004 - Project end date: This project covers various years
Project number: 2004-32
Beneficiary: Fauna & Flora International

Fauna & Flora International's 2003-4 project ‘Empowering Local Conservation Management Practice through Capacity Building and Institutional Strengthening in the Golden Stream Corridor Preserve, Belize', was funded by the Nando Peretti Foundation (the Foundation). Fauna & Flora International's (FFI) local partner in this initiative is the Ya'axche' Conservation Trust (YCT), a primarily indigenous, non-governmental organization which FFI is assisting to meet their goal of managing the Golden Stream Corridor Preserve (GSCP) for the benefit of local Mayan communities, and the conservation of critical biodiversity in southern Belize. The past year of support has proven critical in advancing the Ya'axche' Conservation Trust and overall Golden Stream programme towards full institutional independence. To refer back to the original 3- year proposal submitted to the Foundation in October 2002, this long-term goal is to be achieved through the following key programme components:

1. Designing a multi-stakeholder conservation management regime in the Golden Stream watershed;

2. Advocating for sustainable forest management through practice and policy;

3. Developing a community outreach programme creating awareness and opportunity for biodiversity conservation and sustainable development at the local level;

4. Establishing a professionally equipped field Centre at the GSCP;

5. Ensuring YCT's institutional independence through concerted capacity-building.
