Humanitarian Missions for the needy

Project location: Georgia
Project start date: July 2006 - Project end date: December 2009
Project number: 2006-31
Beneficiary: SCUDO DI SAN GIORGIO

The floods that struck Georgia in March-April 2006 in the Provinces of Kharaguli, Tsalenjikha, Lentkhi, Tsagheri, Lagodekhi, and Dusheti have left many villages of the rural areas in great poverty (4.500 people are homeless). The area affected consists of mainly agricultural land, small villages and citadels. Some of the villages on the hills are isolated as the bridges have been destroyed, the other villages in the valleys have been severely damaged. All the fields have been damaged and the crops destroyed, also because the floods of the year 2006 come after a first flood happened in March 2005 in which more than 10.000 people have been isolated. The Georgia Civil Protection took care of those thousands of people during the last year and wrote a letter to the Ambassador of the Republic of Georgia to the Holy See, Kéthévane Bagration de Moukhrani, in order to organize an humanitarian mission from Italy.

The Together for Peace Foundation organized a humanitarian mission in the name of the Nando Peretti Foundation, to be sent to Georgia in July 2006 in help of the victims of the floods. The 4ft container will hold 11 tons of vitaminized beens and vitaminized soup, 2 benches of clothes, 3 benches of sanitary articles for children, 1 bench of toys, 1 bench of didactical materials for a total of 16 tons of humanitarian aid.
The Nando Peretti Foundation has awarded a grant to cover the cost of the transport from Rome to Poti (Georgia). The container will leave Rome on July 25th 2006 and arrive in Georgia on August 15th. In September 2006 another humanitarian mission will be organized by the Together for Peace Foundation, together with a second container donated by the Nando Peretti Foundation that will contain brown pasta and brow rice. Both containers will arrive in Georgia by the end of September 2006 and the transportation costs will be covered by the Nando Peretti Foundation.

The Italian-Georgian Association - Scudo di San Giorgio, whose former president was the Ambassador to the Holy See, has direct relations with the Director of the Georgian Civil Protection of the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Georgia, Mr Zurab Chikvaidze, that would assure total assistance for the distribution of humanitarian aid on site. The members of the association would anyhow be participating and supervise both to the transportation and to the distribution of the humanitarian aid.
