Support to Working Immigrants' Families

Project location: Italy
Project start date: February 2003 - Project end date: February 2005
Project number: 2002-11
Beneficiary: CARITAS

The project was proposed by the Arciconfraternita del Santo Sacramento - Diocesan Caritas of Rome. The Nando Peretti Foundation supports the starting up of the activities of the nursery Piccolo Mondo, for children of immigrants, refugees and Italians aged between 6 and 36 months, in the newly restored location in Rome. This nursery originally created in 1988 for the children of the Philippine working community, has grown considerably and now accepts also children of other immigrants and Italians, thus reaching a multicultural dimension.

The grant given by the Nando Peretti Foundation have been used for three main objectives: purchase of furniture (for the nursery and the kitchen), linen and teaching material; specific training for the nursery staff of Piccolo Mondo through the hiring of a professional trainer, also based on the results of the research "Living conditions of migrant and refugee families in the receiving country, under educational, social, cultural and emotional aspects" (a 12 months research carried out with the Dept. of Psychology of Rome University "La Sapienza" on around 100 6 to 48 months old children of immigrants or refugees and their families); activation of a legal and social counselling centre through the hiring of part-time legal and social experts (with the purchase of furniture, computer and relevant documentation material), creation of a cultural centre for parents for the organisation of cultural events to favour exchange among the families (6 traditional events are planned for the next 18 months) and of a workshop for the production of traditional toys through the hiring of one part-time craftsman and six part-time apprentices (with the purchase of equipment, tools, and supplies).
