The Nando Peretti Foundation has awarded a grant for the purchase of medical equipment for the paediatric hospital Bambino Gesù (Rome and S. Marinella centers)/Italy

1) Continuous Dialysis CRRT Device (Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy).
At the Dialysis Service in Rome hemodialysis treatments are performed for acute and chronic diseases and children are cared for in peritoneal dialysis (dialysis where blood is cleaned inside the body and not in a machine like in hemodialysis). The service can also provide highly specialized emergency treatments with continuous emo-filtration techniques, which would allow the dialysis of low weight newborns and infants in a coma for metabolic diseases and children with serious cardiovascular instability problems.
Dialysis Service also has a portable device to carry out urgent dialysis in Intensive Care. Each year about 2,000 dialysis sessions are performed and 10-15 children undergo peritoneal treatment, most of whom come from other regions. The CRRT is a recent innovation for continuous extracorporeal dialysis in Intensive Care.

2) Neonatal non-invasive ventilation device
The Neonatology Medical and Surgical department of Rome treats children aged less than 30 days in need of particularly complex and advanced assistance, including:
- Premature infants and / or low birth weight, especially if born before 32 weeks. of age or with a birth weight below 1.5 kg;
- Babies at risk because of difficult pregnancy, labour or delivery;
- Newborns with congenital deficiencies or metabolic and kidney diseases.

In particular, the department excels in the treatment of newborns with severe respiratory insufficiency. The non-invasive ventilation is a system now widely used in neonatal care in order to limit the use of tracheal intubation in infants who have these insufficiencies. With this technique, ventilation is achieved by applying a constant pressure to nasal routes throughout the respiratory cycle.
