One Hundred Hours For One Hundred Families

Project location: Italy
Project start date: February 2002 - Project end date: June 2003
Project number: 2001-19
Beneficiary: Associazione Alzheimer Roma

The Alzheimer Association of Rome - affiliated with the Italian Alzheimer Federation - has been founded in March 1998 and it is a no-profit Association registered on the Lazio regional roll of voluntary groups. Its services, provided by 18 volunteers plus a number of doctors and other professionals from several different sectors related to the disease, are entirely free of charge. The Association's tasks are: the promotion of awareness of the disease; the collection of up-to-date scientific information regarding diagnosis and treatment; the assistance to family-member carers through a telephone help-line and one-on-one, in-office counselling; the organization of courses for families and volunteers conducted or chaired by university professors in the field and by representatives from Rome's main health offices.

The Nando Peretti Foundation finances the "One hundred hours for one hundred families" project that stems from the awareness as to the lack of a safety net of outside help to family carers. It also aims at providing one hundred hours of home help to one hundred families, selected among those who are known to the Association as well as among those brought to the Association's attention by the Alzheimer Evaluation Units of public hospitals.

Through the provision of this service, the project essentially aims at weighing the impact on improving the quality of life of 100 families and making a contribution to public health services for a better approach to the disease in several respects. A multi-disciplinary panel will supervise the project during its implementation by professional carers belonging to well-known local cooperatives, duly trained beforehand.
