Enlarging an Existing Unit of Thoracic Surgery at San Camillo Forlanini Hospital

The Organization (Unita' Operativa Chirurgia Toracica) represents one of the biggest Unit of Thoracic Surgery in Italy and in EU, with around 1300 general thoracic operations per year. Furthermore the organization provides high level scientific activity with focus on lung neoplasm, mediastinal neoplasm, and minimal-invasive thoracic surgery (VATS).

The Nando Peretti Foundation financed a project to enlarge the Unit and to provide more comfortable and better equipped rooms for patients with thoracic diseases in order to answer to the continuous need of thoracic surgery in Italy.

The extra rooms provided to the Unit allowed to increase the number of patients and to give them a better care.

The project included the demolition of all the existing side-wall, the external and inner fixtures, and of the freight elevator at that time out of order. The existing doors were enlarged. The new side wall was built in order to accommodate four double bedrooms, a bedroom, and a medical office. External and inner fixtures were made in painted aluminum. New motorized shutters were mounted. Each room was provided with a toilet, washbasin, and shower. The new floor was done in 15x70 cm laminated parquet, 4 mm thick. The corridor was fitted with 40x40 gres floor tiles. Each room was provided with wall closets, LCD monitor, video recorder, nurse calling-system.

The floor and the railing of the terrace and the balcony was renovated.

1. Overall View

The ward was served by the pre-existing  installments (electricity, water, medical gases).

Air conditioning needed to be installed. 

2. Air Conditioning Of The Unit

The ward was supplied with a new air-conditioning system.

The air conditioning of the unit is of a mixed type (primary air and fan coils) for the bedroom, and of a plan-air system (by anemostati) for the corridor.

3.Sanitary Fittings

A hygienic restrooms were built in each bedroom.

Warm and cold water are supplied by the hospital.

4. Medical Gases System

The medical gases system was connected to the hospital's system. Each bed were provided with oxygen and vacuum devices.

5. Electrical System

The electrical system was renovated.

Each bed was equipped with a lighting system, call, TV, telephone, and wall socket

6. Special Systems

Each bedroom was equipped with:

Internet facilities, satellite TV, phone, connection to the in hospital network system.

A 18"-20" LCD monitor was provided to each bedroom.

A fire survey system was also installed.
