Final Report 2006 Accademia di Bel Canto

This 2006 edition financed by the Nando Peretti Foundation ran for three weeks from 19th August until 6th September 2006. The legendary Italian soprano Mirella Freni, who like Dame Kiri was also a colleague of Maestro Solti, gave coaching sessions.

The 2006 edition gathered fourteen young opera singers from Mexico, Russia, Japan, China, Canada, Sweden, Portugal, and United Kingdom. All have been attracted by the perspective of participating to four days of masterclasses run by the great Italian soprano Mirella Freni, as well as by the ten-day intensive course which preceded them, a real full immersion into Italian language, music and sensibility. Auditions to select the students took place in London in March 2006.

From August 21st to September 5th, coaching was given by Jonathan Papp (vocal coach) Artistic Director and member of the Vocal Faculty and the Opera School at the Royal Academy of Music, London; Emanuela Ferrari (linguistic coach) Italian language and repertoire coach at Royal Academy of Music, London; Corradina Caporello (linguistic coach) Italian language and diction coach at Juilliard School of Music, New York, and at Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia; Paolo Speca (vocal coach) Baritone and Head of the Vocal Faculty at Pescara Conservatoire; and Shirley Keane (drama and movement) founder and Artistic Director of London's East End Opera.
From August 29th to September 3rd , masterclasses were given by Mirella Freni.

Vocal students from the Music Schools of the Province of Grosseto and the region of Tuscany were given listening access to these masterclasses. The Accademia collaborated with the Orchestra of Città di Grosseto giving young local musicians the opportunity to work with the singers of the Accademia as well as providing the singers with valuable experience of practicing with a full symphony orchestra.

On September 1st a concert was hosted by Alain Ducasse at Hotel Andana, Castiglione della Pescaia. On September 3rd a concert was organized in memory of Sir Georg Solti at Piazza Solti, Castiglione Della Pescaia. On September 4th a concert was given in the Medici fortress of Grosseto and the closing concert was given on September 5th at Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. The end-of-the-year concert was held in London at the close of the Academy 2006, together with the Orchestra of Città di Grosseto.
The Nando Peretti Foundation has supported the Academy 2006 with a donation which covered the cost of compensation of the 4 teachers for 17 days, the scholarships for all 14 singers and two pianists and the recording and production of a promotional CD in 2000 copies.
